Drumstick Sambar / Nuggekai / Murungakki Sambar



“Drumstick” is an easily available vegetable which is cultivated mostly in Asian and African regions. It is a staple vegetable in Southern India and is also widely consumed in other states.It is one of the oldest foods that our parents and grandparents and even those before them had been regularly eating it as part of their daily meals.




Ingredients:
 
  • Toor dal – 1 cup
  • Drumstick 7-8, peeled and chopped in 3-4 inches in pieces
  • Medium size potato - 1
  • Turmeric powder – 1/4 tsp
  • Sambhar powder– 2 tsp (adjust according to your taste)
  • Mustard seeds-1/4 tsp
  • Tomato – 1
  • Garlic cloves 4 
  • Onion -1
  • Tamarind Juice 1 tsp
  • Curry leaves – 5-8
  • Salt to taste
  • Oil – 2 tbsp
  • Coriander leaves 

Steps:

Step 1:  Pressure cook dal with turmeric powder, chopped tomatoes and garlic.
Once dal is cooked well, open the lid  and mash them nicely.

Step 2: Add some water to the dal about 1/2 cup or so to make them thin and also add tamarind juice and mix them.

Step 3: In pan heat oil, add mustard seeds, curry leaves, chopped onions after then sputter and sauté for a while.

 Step 4: Then add chopped drumsticks, potato and cook for a while add  turmeric powder, sambar  powder , salt and mix them well  sprinkle some water .

Step 5: Now add the sautéed  dal and mix them.

Step 6: Now boil the sambar in medium heat till  drumsticks gets cooked.

Step 7: Once the drumsticks are done switch off the flame, garnish with some chopped coriander leaves.
